Thomas Gratzer, MD, is a highly respected board-certified psychiatrist with more than three decades of experience in general and forensic psychiatry throughout the Twin Cities region of Minnesota. Throughout his distinguished career, he has earned recognition for his commitment to patient care, academic achievement, forensic expertise, and innovative contributions to both medicine and technology. His work has impacted hospitals, correctional facilities, universities, and professional organizations, making him a trusted figure in psychiatry. Having previously served patients at Psych Recovery, he is preparing to return to practice there, continuing his longstanding dedication to delivering high-quality psychiatric care.
Born in Bellefonte, Pennsylvania, Dr. Gratzer was raised in a family deeply connected to education and healthcare. His father served as a mathematics professor at Penn State University before relocating the family to Winnipeg, Manitoba. His mother practiced dentistry, while his brother and sister-in-law pursued careers as physicians in Toronto. This academically driven environment helped shape his lifelong dedication to learning and professional excellence.
He attended Saint John’s Ravenscourt School in Winnipeg, where he graduated with distinction and received the prestigious Governor General’s Medal. Dr. Gratzer later earned both his Bachelor of Science in Medicine and Doctor of Medicine degrees from the University of Manitoba. He completed his postgraduate psychiatry residency at the same institution before advancing his specialized training with a Fellowship in Forensic Psychiatry at Rush-Presbyterian/St. Luke’s Medical Center in Chicago. His clinical training included rotations in adolescent psychiatry, chronic care, consultation-liaison psychiatry, geriatrics, research, and forensic psychiatry.
Leadership in Clinical Psychiatry
Dr. Thomas has spent his career serving patients in hospitals and treatment centers across Minnesota. He has worked at respected institutions, including Regions Hospital, United Hospital, Fairview University Medical Center, and Psych Recovery. His extensive clinical experience has enabled him to provide care for individuals facing severe psychiatric illnesses and complex mental health conditions. Currently, he manages approximately 100 patient visits per week and conducts several forensic psychiatric evaluations.
From 1995 through 2016, Dr. Gratzer served as an attending psychiatrist at United Hospital in St. Paul, where he played a significant role in treating patients with serious psychiatric disorders. During this same period, he also worked as a Senior Forensic Psychiatrist at the Minnesota Security Hospital from 1995 to 2002. His responsibilities involved evaluating mentally disordered offenders and helping develop treatment strategies within forensic settings.
In addition, Dr. Gratzer served as a consulting psychiatrist for the Minnesota Department of Corrections Juvenile Detention Center from 1999 to 2015. In this role, he provided psychiatric services for incarcerated youth, many of whom required specialized mental health treatment and support. His dedication to vulnerable populations demonstrates his broader commitment to improving access to and outcomes in mental healthcare.
Academic Contributions and Teaching
Beyond his clinical work, Dr. Thomas Gratzer has made meaningful contributions to psychiatric education. From 2002 through 2021, he served as an Adjunct Assistant Professor in the Department of Psychiatry at the University of Minnesota Medical School. During his academic career, he educated medical students, psychiatry residents, and law students on topics in psychiatry and forensic mental health.
His lectures extended beyond Minnesota and included teaching engagements at institutions such as the University of Manitoba, Rush-Presbyterian/St. Luke’s Medical Center, DePaul Law School, and Regions Hospital. Students and colleagues have benefited from his practical experience and deep understanding of forensic psychiatry, legal systems, and psychiatric treatment methods.
Dr. Gratzer’s leadership abilities were also recognized early in his career when he served as medical staff president at the St. Peter Regional Treatment Center in 1997. His involvement in administrative and policy-making activities reflected his ability to guide institutional improvements while advocating for quality psychiatric care.
Research, Publications, and Professional Recognition
Dr. Gratzer has authored numerous peer-reviewed journal articles, contributing valuable research to forensic psychiatry. His scholarly work has explored topics such as impulse control disorders, treatment approaches for paraphilia, compulsive sexual behavior management, and the relationship between legal systems and psychiatric care. His publications have advanced both academic understanding and practical treatment strategies for mentally disordered offenders.
Throughout his career, he has received several notable research awards. In 1994, he earned the Merrell Dow Psychiatric Research Award and the S. W. Prowse Memorial Award for Clinical Research at the University of Manitoba. He also achieved national recognition through honors from the American Academy of Psychiatry and the Law and the American Academy of Forensic Sciences.
Dr. Gratzer remains active in several respected professional organizations, including the American Psychiatric Association, the American Academy of Psychiatry and the Law, and the Minnesota Psychiatric Association. He has participated in committees focusing on psychopharmacology and sex offender treatment, further demonstrating his dedication to advancing forensic psychiatry and improving mental health practices.
Innovation Beyond Medicine
In addition to his achievements in psychiatry, Dr. Gratzer has a strong background in computer science. During his youth, he earned first prize at the Manitoba Science Fair for a computer program and later participated in Prince Philip’s International Science Fortnight in London, England. He co-authored the book FAST BASIC: Beyond TRS-80 BASIC, which sold more than 10,000 copies. Between 1984 and 1990, he also contributed to the development of VP-Info, a database programming language for IBM PCs that sold over 100,000 copies.
Outside of his professional life, Dr. Thomas Gratzer enjoys tennis, skiing, exercise, travel, and exploring fine cuisine. He is married to Denise, a marketing professor and business owner, and remains passionate about supporting mental health initiatives and charitable contributions to his university foundation.
